Detectives in Islington are appealing for information and witnesses after a couple out watching football in a pub were assaulted.

On Saturday, 10 September, police were called at around 16:30hrs to reports of fighting at The Millers Pub, Caledonian Road, N1.

Officers attended and found a 45-year-old man suffering from a swollen right eye and a 46-year-old woman suffering from a swollen left eye.

Both victims were taken to hospital. The man sustained significant injuries to his eye.

Detectives from Islington Borough CID are investigating.

At this stage of the investigation it is understood the victims, a husband and wife, both of whom are teachers, were watching the Manchester United vs Manchester City football match. At around 14.30hrs they decided to leave, when a male became verbally abusive. He then brutally punched them both in the face, before walking out of the pub.

Officers have released a still image from CCTV of the incident of the man that they wish to identify and speak to regarding the attack.

DC Adrian Safiani, who leads the investigation for Islington CID, said: “This was a horrible assault on what should have been a relaxing afternoon out. The injured man now suffers from visual impairment after having a titanium plate fitted to his eye socket. We are keen to hear from anyone who may recognise the male on the image or anyone who witnessed the incident.”

Anyone that can assist the investigation is asked to contact Islington CID via 101. To give information anonymously contact Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 or visit crimestoppers-uk.org.
