Tottenham attacker Marcus Edwards, who has been compared to Lionel Messi by Mauricio Pochettino, made his first-team debut against Gillingham in the EFL Cup on Wednesday night.

Spurs advanced to the fourth round of the competition with a 5-0 win over their Sky Bet League One opponents, thanks to two strikes from Christian Eriksen, a Vincent Janssen penalty and goals by Josh Onomah and Erik Lamela.

Edwards came off the bench with 15 minutes remaining and went close to capping a dream week with his first goal, but Gills ‘keeper Jonathan Bond tipped his effort over the bar after a Messi-like run.

Marcus Edwards is the son of Matt and Androulla who is of Cypriot origin he is London born and bred, and attended Winchmore Hill School and has represented England at Under-16, Under-17 and Under 18 levels.
