HARINGEY BOROUGH V THURROCK
Ryman League Division One North 10th September 2016 Coles Park
The second time in the space of 5 days, a club with a RM postcode played at Coles Park and it still wasn’t Romford. Thurrock, last season’s division north runners-up visited Haringey and returned home with the three points that could have gone in Haringey’s favour.
With 14 goals scored in the last two games (9 at Haringey, 5 for Thurrock), both sides approached the game with more trepidation and free flowing football was at a premium.
The first half didn’t light up the rain laden skies and only 3 decent chances were created. With Thurrock’s Harry Cook scoring after 10 minutes, a side foot finish from 3 yards out and Haringey’s 2 goes producing a save by Darren Behcet from a Ruaridh Kay shot and Adrian Markus shooting against the crossbar just before half-time.
The rain was getting heavier and with the wind, spectators in the stand were all sitting on the back 4 rows trying to keep dry, but the one thing that was certain, the match would not be abandoned because of a waterlogged pitch! The wise investment showing what can be done.
Haringey equalised after 5 minutes in the second half, when a Kay mishit a shot and Joshua Willer got the faintest touch to divert it pass the Thurrock keeper. Willer had another shot saved well by Behcet and Borough were in the ascendency.
18 minutes in and the incident that changed the game. Kay having been booked in the first half for dissent had a coming together with a Thurrock player and Kay received his second yellow. Borough down to 10 men.
Haringey were the better team, even after the sending off and did create more chances but it was Thurrock’s Ronnie Winn with 10 minutes to go that won it for them. A 20 yarder from the edge of the box.
The referee blew with Thurrock under pressure, but with all Haringey’s effort, it still results with a tick in the lost column.
Haringey will be looking for revenge in their next match, which is against AFC Hornchurch away in the Alan Turvey Trophy on Tuesday 13th September.
