US Vice President Joe Biden and Turkish Prime Minister Yildirim Binali discussed today, among other issues, the question of Cyprus, saying the leaders of the island`s two communities are engaged in negotiations towards a political settlement to reunite the country.

Biden said that the US would continue to talk to the two leaders, Cyprus President Nicos Anastasiades and Turkish Cypriot leader Mustafa Akinci who embarked on an intensified round of talks yesterday, under UN auspices.

The US Vice President said they are negotiating the reunification of Cyprus under a federal roof.

The Turkish PM acknowledged Washington`s efforts with regard to the Cyprus question and expressed hope that this time the opportunity for a solution will not be missed.

He maintained that the Turkish side has always been in favour of a solution.

Biden and Binali also discussed developments both in Turkey and in the region, including the fight against Islamic State, terrorism and last month`s failed coup against the Turkish government. Biden assured Ankara that Washington remains a most faithful ally and friend of Turkey.

Cyprus has been divided since Turkish troops invaded and occupied the island`s northern part in 1974. Repeated UN-led peace talks have so far failed to yield results towards a settlement.
