Enfield Council announced this week that it had completed a £288k project to upgrade nine of its corporate buildings with energy efficient LED (Light Emitting Diode) lights, which will generate annual savings of £54k a year and save 254 tonnes of carbon dioxide.

The upgrades have also improved the quality of lighting and illumination levels in buildings and have prolonged the lifespan of fittings, which significantly reduces maintenance costs.

The installations were carried out at Charles Babbage House, John Wilkes House, Enfield Business Centre, Community House, Park Avenue Day Centre, the CCTV Centre, Marsh House, the Youth Offending Centre and Enfield Music Centre by the Laser Buying Group Ltd. It was funded through the council’s Salix Recycling Fund.

This initiative is part of the Enfield 2020 sustainability programme, where invest-to-save projects are being used to improve the energy performance of council buildings. This reduces costs, energy use and carbon emissions.

Enfield Council’s Cabinet Member for Economic Regeneration & Business, Cllr Alan Sitkin, said “These LED lights are great news. They not only provide optimum luminescence but they have much lower maintenance costs and carbon emissions, so they are great news for the environment.

“Enfield Council puts our money where our mouth is by making sure our own buildings have green credentials. With these new lights our respect for planet earth is sure to put us in the spotlight!”
