30-year-old Cypriot woman was killed while mountain-climbing in the French Alps on Monday.

French media reports suggest that the woman, who had travelled to France on holiday, was killed instantly when she fell off a 400-metre cliff after her safety rope broke.

French authorities are investigating the incident.

In a statement, the Foreign ministry confirmed the 30-year-old’s death in a mountain-climbing accident on Monday.

“Cyprus’ embassy in France has contacted the victim’s next of kin and is making all necessary arrangements for the repatriation of her body,” the statement said.

Respecting the family’s wishes, the ministry said, it will divulge no further information on the incident.

Earlier, Foreign ministry official Omiros Mavrommatis told state TV that the 30-year-old had travelled to France on holiday with a 38-year-old friend of hers.

“We can unfortunately confirm [Monday’s] tragic incident in the Alps,” he said.

“It was a mountain-climbing accident, an unfortunate incident, but we can say no more. The embassy has been trying to help the family’s efforts to repatriate the body.”
