The final member of a team who conspired to break a man out of prison has been found guilty, at Woolwich Crown Court, today, Thursday, 26 May.

Eren Hasyer, 25 (26.6.90) of Kettering Road, Enfield, was found guilty of conspiracy to commit an indictable offence, namely, to aid the escape of Izzet Eren from lawful custody, contrary to common law.

He was found not guilty of: possession of an imitation firearm with intent to commit an indictable offence.

Ozcan Eren, 31 (10.6.84) of Douglas Road, Wood Green, pleaded guilty on 18 May to conspiracy to commit an indictable offence, namely, to aid the escape of Izzet Eren from lawful custody, contrary to common law and possession of an imitation firearm with intent to commit an indictable offence.

At an earlier hearing on Monday, 29 February, at Woolwich Crown Court, their co-conspirators, Nathan Mason and Gokay Sogucakli, pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit an indictable offence, namely, to aid the escape of Izzet Eren from lawful custody, contrary to common law and possession of an imitation firearm with intent to commit and indictable offence.

On the same day, at the same court, Izzet Eren, who the gang aimed to break free, pleaded guilty to: conspiracy to escape lawful custody and possession of an imitation firearm with intent to commit an indictable offence.

Detective Chief Superintendent Tom Manson from the Serious and Organised Crime Command, said: “This was a bold, well planned and carefully thought out conspiracy that bears all the hallmarks of a professional crime. The team used special mobile phones and SIM cards to communicate on the day of the planned break out. They put in place anti-surveillance techniques; their own surveillance ‘unit’ and a command structure to run the operation.

“The escape attempt was stopped by officers from the Serious and Organised Crime Command supported by Specialist Firearms officers.

“During the course of our operation on Friday, 11 December, Jermaine Baker who was in the car with Mason and Sogucakli was fatally shot by a police. His death continues to be subject to an ongoing independent investigation by the IPCC. At this stage there are some details that we cannot release so as not to prejudice that investigation.”

Izzet Eren, 33(15.01.83) and Erwin Amoah-Gyamfi, 29 (07.09.86) were stopped by armed officers as part of an intelligence led operation, on a stolen motorbike in Stamford Hill, N16, on Tuesday, 13 October. In his bag Eren had a loaded pistol that was ready to fire.In a bag dropped nearby officers recovered a loaded Skorpion submachine gun.Intelligence led police to believe that the pair were on their way to kill or injure someone. They both pleaded guilty on Thursday, 29 October 2015 at Wood Green Crown Court and were remanded in custody for sentencing on Friday, 11 December.

Detectives believe that Izzet Eren had decided he did not want to spend a lengthy time in prison, having been caught red-handed, and so used his cousin Ozcan Eren to recruit a team to break him out of prison as he was transferred to Wood Green Crown Court for sentencing.

Early in the morning, at about 08:00hrs on 11 December the first car – a black Audi estate – which contained Mason, Sogucakli and Jermaine Baker, parked up near to Wood Green Crown Court in Bracknell Close.

This car had been stolen from an address in Fulham in the summer of 2015 and was under the control of Ozcan Eren.Police fitted this car with a covert listening device as part of the operation. This car carried those people that police believe were meant to carry out the assault on the prison van.

Shortly before 09:00hrs that morning, armed police surrounded the car. During this part of the operation Mr Baker was fatally wounded by a police officer. Mason and Sogucakli were arrested. Two mobile phones and a replica Uzi machine gun were recovered from the car.

Mason was wearing a ski mask, dark hat, latex gloves under a pair of woolen gloves, long johns under dark jogging bottoms, tracksuit top and a coat.

Sogucakli was wearing a coat, five tops and three pairs of tracksuits bottoms. Detectives believe this was to reduce forensic opportunities; conceal their identities and help their escape by quickly changing their appearance.

Ozcan Eren and Eren Hasyer were in the ‘control’ car – a hired Audi S-Line estate – for the gang’s operation parked up in Warwick Road, N11, facing towards Bounds Green Road. Ozcan Eren had predicted the route that the prison van would take from Wormwood Scrubs to Wood Green Crown Court and was communicating with his cousin about the exact location of the van.

Detectives believe that Ozcan Eren became aware of the police operation just after the prison van had driven past the car that he and Hasyer were parked in. The car they were in was stopped by armed police in Barratt Avenue, N22, and both men were arrested.

Izzet Eren was arrested for his part in the plot at Wood Green Crown Court. A search of the prison van found a mobile phone, which contained text messages to his cousin, broken into many pieces and concealed in a heating duct. The mobile was made of plastic, detectives believe to make it easier to hide during searches.

Izzet Eren and Erwin Amoah-Gyamfi were both sentenced for the October offences on Friday, 11 December. They were both jailed for 14 years.

Detective Chief Superintendent Manson, added: “It is clear from this investigation that the Eren cousins are dangerous and motivated criminals. The evidence from our investigation is so overwhelming that they, and all but one of their co-conspirators, have chosen to plead guilty.”
