We try in every way to create the conditions that will allow the return of Famagusta said President Nicos Anastasiades, in his speech at the presentation of the book “Anorthosis 100 years of history.”

Saying that the Government is negotiating with determination and good will, but faces difficulties he noted that he doesn`t want to crate illusions or false images to the people.

The President said that progress has been observed, but there are still significant problems to overcome, by “those who unfortunately persist”.

“And I do not mean the Cypriot side. I speak for those who daily say that they are determined to help finding a solution”, he said, adding that practical steps are expected.

“I would like to hope that during 2016 the keys of the city will be delivered to you”, the President said addressing to the Mayor of the occupied city.

The fenced-off section of the Turkish occupied town of Famagusta – called Varosha- was abandoned by its lawful inhabitants, in the wake of advancing Turkish troops during the 1974 invasion. Famagusta was captured by the Turkish military during the second phase of the Turkish invasion, in mid August 1974. Ever since it has remained sealed off, under the control of the Turkish military.

UN Security Council resolution 550 (1984) considers any attempts to settle any part of Varosha by people other than its inhabitants as inadmissible and calls for the transfer of this area to the administration of the UN.

UN-led talks are underway in a bid to reunify the island under a federal roof.
