President of the Hellenic Republic Prokopis Pavlopoulos stressed that a solution of the Cyprus problem must include the withdrawal of Turkish troops and illegal settlers as well as the guarantee of the European acquis communautaire.

The Greek President, who received today a delegation of the board of the Pancyprian Association of Reserve Commandos, described as unacceptable the continuation of the status quo in Cyprus since 1974.

Pavlopoulos said that a solution of the Cyprus problem would only then be acceptable when it guarantees Cyprus` course in the framework of the European Union and the Eurozone. It must also include the full withdrawal of all occupation troops and the departure of all settlers.

“Those are the real red lines for us Greeks”, he concluded.

The Republic of Cyprus is divided by Turkish troops since the Turkish invasion in 1974. UN led talks aiming at reunifying the island under a federal roof resumed this month after the Greek Cypriot side had suspended them last October due to Turkey`s violation of Cyprus` sovereign rights in the Cypriot Exclusive Economic Zone.
