Police and Game Service officials have discovered what they suspect to be meat belonging to a Mouflon following poaching clampdowns through Paphos.
The discovery was made by police after discovering six nylon bags on Tuesday in the garden of a house in the village of Kanaviou. The meat, which was cut into 15 peices, was taken to the local veterinary station in Paphos for forensic investigation with officials believing that it orginates from the mouflon – a protected species in Cyprus.
The owner of the house was arrested and charged before being released a short time later. The woman’s daughter and son-in-law were also brought in for questioning.
The Cyprus mouflon population contains only about 3000 animals. They are now rare on the islands, but are classified as feral animals by the animal rights organisations.
Elsewhere, police questioned a man after various birds and a hare were found in his possession while he was also in possession of a hunting rifle without having the necessary permit while 15 bags containing various birds (said to be 300) and net were discovered on another man.
