On the occasion of Independence Day of the Republic of Cyprus, on the 1st of October, the President of the Federal Republic of Germany Joackim Gauck sent a congratulatory message to President of the Republic Nicos Anastasiades, in which he refers to the Cyprus problem and the economy.

In his message, Gauck notes that “the negotiations resumed in February of this year to overcome the painful division of Cyprus are not least thanks to your personal commitment and the will of your people. Allow me to encourage you and your country’s people to continue to strive for a joint solution to the conflict”.

He notes that “with regard to the effects of the adaptation and reform programme on your country, I would like to express my respect for the resolve and readiness of the people of Cyprus to continue the process they have started”.

“Rest assured”, the German President stresses, “that Germany stands shoulder to shoulder with Cyprus and will support your country in its efforts to manage these manifold tasks”.

“On the occasion of the 54th anniversary of your country’s independence, permit me to offer you and the people of the Republic of Cyprus my sincere congratulations, also on behalf of my compatriots”, he concludes.

The Republic of Cyprus has been divided since 1974 when Turkey invaded and since then occupies 37% of this EU member’s territory
