British jihadis returning from Iraq and Syria could be temporarily banned from entering the country under plans mooted by David Cameron.

Those suspected of being involved in terror acts would be allowed to keep their British citizenship, but would be prevented from ‘re-entering the country for a period of time’, according to a cabinet source.

‘The government is considering a range of measures to keep the country safe in the face of an increased threat level from extremism,’ the insider told BBC News.

‘The areas include making it harder for potential foreign fighters to travel abroad by making it easier to remove their passports. We are also looking at stopping British citizens from re-entering the country if they are suspected of terrorist activity abroad.’

The Home Office was unable to explain exactly how the plans to counter the threat posed by Islamic State militants might work.

However, Mr Cameron is expected to provide more details in a Commons statement today.
