A lot depends on the stance of newly-elected Turkish President Erdoğan as to whether the stalemate in Cyprus will continue or not, the President of the Republic of Cyprus Nicos Anastasiades has stated on Sunday.

The President noted moreover that the next few months will be the most crucial ones in the current phase of peace talks, aiming to reach a negotiated settlement. He added that an indication of Erdoğan`s good will for a solution in Cyprus will become apparent in September, during the UN General Assembly in New York.

In statements at the village of Pedoulas, in the Nicosia District, President Anastasiades said that “according to information, Erdoğan appears decisive” for contributing to a Cyprus solution. This, he noted, will become apparent in due course.

Moreover, the President expressed hope that Cyprus` strategic allies and its European partners will become more active in pushing for results or some initiatives over Cyprus.

Speaking about the UN General Assembly, in September, President Anastasiades said that consultations and actions, in the margins of the Assembly, will prove whether the new Turkish President is willing to contribute substantially in ending the island`s occupation by Turkish troops and in finding a lasting solution, that is suitable for a European country.

Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkish troops invaded and occupied its northern third
