In 1974, a ceasefire was declared on the island of Cyprus, after two days of fighting between Greek and Turkish forces.

The conflict over Cyprus began after a Greek supported military coup deposed Cypriot president Archbishop Makarios III.

Turkish forces invaded the island, capturing parts of the northern coast following heavy shelling and bombing.

Turkey’s invasion led to the partition of the island, and the forced displacement of over 150,000 Greek Cypriots to areas south of a United Nations Green Line, which still divides Cyprus.
