Police on Tuesday arrested the 43-year-old wife of a Greek Orthodox priest who was shot dead on Monday in Zacharo in the Peloponnesian region of Ilia, as well as the shooter, believed to be the woman’s lover.

According to sources, 51-year-old Athanasios Avgeropoulos, a father of three from Pyra in Fokida, had received threats by telephone.

He was shot when he stopped his car at a roadside after his wife asked to relieve herself, police discovered.

The woman, who had told police that her husband had been shot after withdrawing cash from an ATM, is believed to have set up the ambush on her husband, which was carried out by two men on a motorcycle.

Further questioning revealed that she was having an affair with the 40-year-old suspected killer.
